Retrodata have a proven track record of recovering Xsan servers – even from catastrophic, multiple disk failures. We don’t simply recover the data; we recover the entire RAID server.
This means you will be back into full production days or even weeks ahead of techniques practised by other companies. From a small, 16-drive RAID to networked servers with hundreds of disks and multiple LUNs and volumes, our engineers provide recovery services for all configurations.
Your server will be delivered in a fully operational state and fully configured. Ready to connect to the network, power up, mount all LUNs and volumes, and move straight back into production.
We recover all Xsan failures
- Failed hard drive – or multiple failed disks
- Missing LUN or cannot access storage pool
- Corrupt inode or superblock
- RAID rebuild failed
- Corrupt metadata or crashed MDC
If your Apple Xsan has crashed due to a power failure or surge, the loss of a storage pool, corrupt volume, or a hard drive failed, causing a RAID crash, our engineers are available to advise you. A corrupt metadata volume can cause an Xsan to fail. Corrupt inodes or superblocks can damage the file system. A damaged or corrupt metadata controller (MDC) will prevent access to your data. If a RAID rebuild failed, it is usually necessary to power down the entire system, and sometimes to immediately remove all power. Our engineers will assess the situation and recommend what should be done.

If for any reason you are unable to access the data, our Xsan specialists will step in to help. They have industry-leading RAID recovery skills, capable of dealing with complex storage area networks. They work with all RAID levels, from RAID 1, to RAID 3, RAID 30, RAID 5, RAID 50 and all others including the Round Robin striping used in some Servers. They recover Xsan data from any failure.
If all your recovery attempts have failed and you are still unable to boot into the shares or see any Xsan LUNs, please stop. Repeated attempts risk causing further damage, or complete data loss. Xsan is exceptionally complex and requires specialist RAID recovery skills available only from a handful of providers across the world. Our engineers will work with you to restore your network, regain access to the data, and to get you back into production.
If you have been told that the Xsan cannot be recovered due to the nature of the failure, please contact us. Our engineers regularly and consistently recover RAID-based storage that others have said cannot be recovered. They recover deleted data. Your IT admin, Apple’s top Xsan engineers, and the company that installed and maintains your Xsan network do not have the skills or knowledge of the low-level, forensics RAID recovery techniques we employ for this form of failure.
Why Retrodata? • Can you recover my data? • Emergency Recovery • Why RAID fails
Even if you have been told by your Apple supplier, Apple Technical Support, or the manufacturer of the storage hardware that recovery is impossible, this is rarely the case – even with multiple drive failure. We regularly recover storage systems that have been condemned as unrecoverable by misinformed “specialists” with absolutely no idea what can actually be achieved by experts at low-level data recovery and forensics data recovery techniques.
Typical crashed Apple Xserve or Xsan failure scenarios
- Multiple hard drives failed
- Failed storage pool
- Corrupt inodes
- Missing or lost LUNs
- Corrupted volume
- Damaged or corrupt superblocks
- Damaged or corrupt metadata server
- Firmware update failed or firmware corruption
- Power failure or surge
- Corrupt file system
- Failed JBOD
- Round robin RAID corruption
- Data deleted or formatted
- Incorrect drive swap for RAID rebuild
